Latisse
Latisse® is a cosmetic treatment used to gain thicker, more beautiful eyelashes. The product is recommended to patients who have a condition known as hypotrichosis – inadequate eyelashes. Latisse® was approved by the FDA in 2008, and it is only available through a doctor’s prescription. However, the treatment may be done at home, with once-daily application.
How does it Work?
Latisse® is recommended for patients with inadequate, or no, eyelashes. Patients are instructed to use the solution daily for a minimum of two months to achieve desired results. The formula should only be applied to the upper lid and the medication must be continued for the eyelash improvements to remain.
To use Latisse®, simply apply the solution to the upper lids using the one-time applicator that comes with the product. Use care not to get the solution on other areas of the skin during application, since hair growth in those areas is possible. Be sure to remove eye makeup and cleanse the skin thoroughly before applying the solution. Contacts should also be removed from the eyes prior to application, but can be placed back in around 15 minutes after application.
Risks and Results
Latisse® has resulted in the darkening of the skin of the upper eyelid in some patients, which is irreversible. Other possible side effects of the medication include itchy eyes or dry eyes. Because the medication is also used to treat glaucoma, it is not likely to cause harm if a drop enters the eye during application.
The results of Latisse® can usually be seen within two to four months after the first application. The time may depend on the individual as well as how regularly the solution is used. Latisse® does not result in permanent lash thickening. If the medication is stopped, lashes typically will go back to their original state within a matter of weeks or months.
