Cleaning and Cancer Screening
Ideally, routine cleanings will take place twice a year. Many people schedule their hygiene visit to coincide with their routine check-up. Routine dental cleanings are referred to as prophylaxis, or "prophy." The purpose of this visit is to remove plaque and tartar, if it is present on the teeth.
Plaque is a sticky substance that adheres to the various tooth surfaces and may be especially dangerous to teeth and gums. Plaque has no odor and no color, and may remain on teeth even after home brushing and flossing. It is for this reason that professional cleanings are vital to the prevention of dental problems.
When plaque remains on teeth, bacteria are given the prime conditions in which to thrive. Plaque and it's hardened form, tartar, are both big risk factors in the development of cavities and gum disease due to the fact that they harbor bacteria and support an acidic oral environment in which damage and disease are more likely.
Using gentle techniques and specific instruments, our hygienist works diligently with each patient to remove debris from tooth surfaces and between teeth. The hygiene visit may also involve education on the best ways to brush and floss teeth for sustained oral health between dental check-ups.
Oral cancer screening
Oral cancer is a condition for which the prognosis can be very good if detection occurs early. The oral cancer screening is performed in order to identify potentially cancerous or precancerous lesions in the soft tissues of the mouth, including the lips.
Routine screening for oral cancer is especially important for individuals who have one or more risk factors for this condition, which include:
- The use of any type of tobacco product, including chew, snuff, pipes, cigars, and cigarettes to name a few
- Previous diagnosis for oral cancer
- A higher than normal consumption of alcohol
- Significant sun exposure, through which the risk of lip cancer increases
