Cosmetic Bonding & Contouring
Dental bonding is considered a very conservative treatment, used for both restorative and cosmetic goals. This procedure is, as well, a phenomenal way to maintain the smile's natural beauty. In most cases, bonding requires very little reduction of tooth structure, or possibly none at all. This means that, for most patients, results are completely reversible, allowing for treatment such as porcelain veneers in the future if they so choose.
There are several situations in which dental bonding may be the ideal solution to a smile concern. With this treatment, we may repair or disguise problems such as:
- Small cavities
- Cracks or chips in teeth
- Tooth discoloration or a noticeable, distinct stain
- Small gaps in between teeth
- Gum recession
- Excessive wear
- Odd size, shape, or proportion of a tooth or teeth
- Sensitivity due to wear or gum recession
Dental bonding is an appealing option for a number of reasons. Completed in a single visit, the bonding procedure is virtually painless. In some cases, treatment can be completed without numbing medication. The procedure is also very simple, involving very few steps. If bonding is included in a treatment plan, Dr. Fuller will etch the tooth surface very slightly by applying a liquid conditioner. This conditioner will enable the composite material to adhere to the tooth well.
Composite resin is a putty-like substance consisting of quartz and resin. This material is mixed to the ideal shade of white and is applied directly to the surface of the tooth. After the material has been shaped to the ideal contours, it will be hardened under ultraviolet light. The tooth may be further shaped or trimmed to perfection and then polished for a beautiful, natural appearance.
There are several advantages to the dental bonding procedure. In addition to producing immediate results, bonding is a more economical treatment option because materials are less costly than porcelain veneers and there is no need to involve a dental laboratory to make this restoration. Bonding is minimally invasive, allowing teeth to return to their natural condition very easily. Lastly, a bonded tooth requires no special care for maintenance other than routine brushing and flossing.
Due to the similarities between porcelain and natural enamel, porcelain veneers are more highly recommended when significant cosmetic changes are desired. Bonding is a treatment in which Dr. Fuller is very experienced and one that may be ideal for small cosmetic improvements.
