Give your child a leg up on cavities with dental sealants

Dr. Valerie Fuller provides a high standard of dental care to all of her patients. Recognizing the prevalence of tooth decay in children, she has chosen to offer dental sealants as a preventive treatment against this common childhood dental problem.

Dental sealant treatment is designed to protect teeth prone to tooth decay in deep pits and grooves. The teeth at the back of the mouth, in particular, have crevices on the chewing surface into which bacteria and debris may accumulate. Even with daily brushing and flossing, the pits on some chewing surfaces can be difficult to reach. By applying sealant, which is clear or tooth-colored plastic, Dr. Fuller achieves a greater amount of protection due to the prevention of buildup.

Treating teeth with dental sealants takes only one visit and is completely comfortable. Sealants are often applied after the hygiene cleaning. The process involves the application of the liquid sealant into the grooves of individual teeth. Using a special light, we harden the material and achieve a long lasting bond. Research has shown that sealants can last several years with good care. Resilient plastic material can hold up against the pressures of normal biting and chewing but it may be affected if there is a habit of chewing or biting on hard objects. During routine visits, Dr. Fuller will evaluate the condition of sealants and recommend reapplication as necessary.

Dental sealants are not applied to every tooth or every tooth surface. The smooth surfaces of teeth are typically easily cleaned with brushing and through the natural flow of saliva. The areas that are most at risk of decay are the molars at the back of the mouth due to their deep grooves. Though commonly applied to back teeth, sealants may be used to decrease the risk of tooth decay on any tooth in which deep pits are present.

The application of sealants is highly beneficial for the reduction of tooth decay. This preventive treatment is a complement to daily hygiene performed as demonstrated by the dentist or hygienist. Sealants are not a substitute for oral hygiene. Our patients are encouraged to maintain healthy brushing and flossing habits in order to prevent cavities and other dental problems.
