Professional cleanings are important for children, too!

When parents take their child to the dentist for early dental care, they may be surprised to hear that professional cleanings are recommended. The purpose is to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky substance that adheres to enamel. If not adequately removed, plaque can harden into tartar, a substance that is more difficult to remove with a standard cleaning.

There are several issues with plaque and tartar, even on baby teeth, which we seek to prevent with routine care and cleanings in our friendly Marietta dental practice. While baby teeth will naturally fall out at some point, their health is important to the development of permanent teeth. Additionally, cavities and dental problems in baby teeth are no less uncomfortable and distressing to a child. If we can prevent toothaches and the need for treatment, we improve the child's experiences in the dental office.

As children get older, they will become more responsible for brushing and flossing on their own. One of the goals of our pediatric dental care is to help children and their parents understand the importance of daily hygiene performed with proper techniques for optimal results. The cleanings performed in our office, just like exams and various treatments, are explained to children in a way they can easily understand. We use techniques, products, and a chair side manner that encourages trust between patient and dental staff and do what we can to make the process fun for children.

Children who visit us for a dental cleaning may have the opportunity to pick out the toothbrush and toothpaste they want for their cleaning. Our hygienist will make sure the patient is comfortable and will methodically brush and floss teeth gently while using easy to understand terms to describe the process and the instruments in use. Depending on the chosen care plan, fluoride or dental sealants may also be applied during the visit.
