A. Unfortunately it sounds like you did not really get a Fraxel. The Fraxel is a trademarked name for a very specific technology that was the first to bring fractional non-ablative laser treatments to market. It has a unique roller head that gives uniform delivery of the laser energy. I have no problem with other technologies, but I do think doctors should not mislead patients. Only Fraxel is Fraxel.
Q. I am of Hispanic heritage and have had melasma since I was placed on birth control pills last summer. I have tried bleaching agents with some success, but I would like to see more improvement. Can laser help?
A. There are many options for melasma, but none are guaranteed to clear melasma 100%, forever. I have used light chemical peels, SilkPeel, and IPL, but I have seen the most success with the newest Fraxel advance called the Fraxel thulium (on the Dual system). This laser effectively improves melasma in very stubborn cases. Of course, melasma can be a relapsing condition and therefore requires constant maintenance. Sunscreens, antioxidants, bleaching agents and skin lighteners need to be used for extended periods to prevent recurrences.
