Skin cancer types
There are several types of skin cancer that are diagnosed with a biopsy at our practice. Dr. Mary Lupo, our Board-certified dermatologist, will educate patients on the results of their biopsy and what treatment is best for their specific diagnosis. Below are the most common types:- Basal cell carcinoma cancer – basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that develops in the basal cells. It is typically seen as a lump or brown patch on areas that have received extensive sun exposure, specifically the neck and face.
- Squamous cell carcinoma cancer – this cancer develops quickly on the outermost layer of skin. It is one of the varieties of cancer typically seen in her practice and the most treatable. It is often a result of overexposure to sunlight and appears as a patch, ulcer, or lump on the skin.
- Melanoma skin cancer – melanoma is the deadliest variety of skin cancer. It is typically diagnosed around moles that have changed or grown over time. This is because it attaches to the pigment-producing cells.
