Dental Implants

Dental implants are a common and frequently recommended treatment for patients who are missing individual teeth, or want a way to strengthen their dentures. Implant-supported dentures and tooth replacement are often completed with dental implants, and Dr. Luu of Gentle Care Dentistry of San Gabriel Valley suggests them to many of her patients.
Dental implants are surgically placed in-house by a visiting associate who comes to the office to complete the procedure. Patients will first discuss the possibility of dental implants with Dr. Luu, and CT scans and x-rays are done on site or at a location convenient for the patient, thanks to the mobile company that works closely with the practice. When the patient schedules the procedure, they will come in and the associate will surgically place the implant into the bone. The implant will integrate into the bone over time through the process of osseointegration, which can take anywhere from four to six months. For patients who are undergoing the implant procedure for implant-supported dentures, they will receive dentures that are made to integrate with the implant instead of the custom dental crowns.

There are alternatives to dental implants if patients so desire. Crown and bridge units can be used for patients who are missing a single tooth or just a few teeth within a row. This type of restoration will require Dr. Luu to remove a thin portion of the surrounding teeth's enamel to bond the bridge onto the adjacent teeth properly for support. If patients have perfectly healthy, untouched teeth on both sides of the missing natural tooth, Dr. Luu will typically recommend dental implants instead. Even though the process of preparing a tooth for a crown and bridge restoration is conservative, it still requires enamel removal for proper bonding. Partial dentures are also considered by some patients, but others do not want a removable restoration.

Implant-supported dentures are also considered by some who have had dentures that are ill fitting or will not stay in place. Denture adhesives don't always help, so patients can consider implant-supported dentures for strength and support. These dentures make a huge difference in the way a patient can talk, chew, and bite, and allow them to enjoy excellent retention.
