The introduction of laser technology has dramatically changed modern dermatology practice. The team of professionals at Braun Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center utilizes lasers for many aspects of treatment, to provide comfortable, effective, minimally-invasive care for patients in Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA.

How it began
LASER is an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” A laser device focuses high-intensity light in a specific wavelength. Albert Einstein established the theoretical foundation for laser technology in 1917, and the first functioning laser came into being in 1960. Since that time, lasers have continued to evolve, finding their way into everything from the printer on your desk to grocery store bar code scanners, weapons of war, and medical applications.
Dermatologists began to use lasers more than 40 years ago. We found that certain wavelengths of laser energy were readily absorbed by red pigments in vascular birthmarks such as port wine stains. Treatment heated superficial capillaries, eliminating them and lightening the lesion.
With tremendous advances in laser technology, devices became safer predictable. Now, in the hands of a trained and experienced dermatologist, laser therapies are extremely effective, with low risk of side effects. Braun Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center uses only FDA-cleared laser instrumentation.
