Get a skin allergy test from your Plano dermatologist

Plano, TX patients who are frustrated  because of the tendency to break out in itchy rashes can visit Dr. Bryan Selkin of the Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery who offers skin allergy testing for individuals ready to find out the likely cause. Avoidance is always the best long-term treatment.

What is skin allergy testing?

Also known as patch testing, this diagnostic method is commonly used to identify a specific trigger for breakouts of itchy rashes on the skin. Symptoms of contact dermatitis may include:

  • Rashes
  • Hives
  • Blisters
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Burning

Some patients may be unsure as to how these issues are developing, which is when skin allergy testing comes into play. With skin allergy testing, a dermatologist can safely check to see what substances a patient is allergic to. It may be anything from a metal in their jewelry, a perfume they wear, or the cleaning solutions they use to launder their clothing.

How does it work?

The doctor determines the potential substances that may be causing an allergic reaction for a patient and then places a series of patches with relevant allergens on the skin. They are left on for approximately 48 hours, and then readings are taken. This test is typically done on the back and can provide answers for doctor and patient.  A second reading is done at 96 hours after patch placement. If any of the areas turn red, itchy, or blister, an allergy is likely. The provider will then provide an extensive educational handout explain the allergen, how to avoid it, and even give a specific categorized list of safe items that the patient can then use to avoid the allergen(s).
