Psoriasis is a skin condition that affects many patients in and around the area of Plano, TX. Patients who struggle with this condition are often embarrassed by its presence, especially the thick scaly skin lesions. Dr. Bryan Selkin believes in treating psoriasis in an effective but conservative way, avoiding side effects when possible.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition that affects millions of individuals in the United States. This condition is chronic and can become not only embarrassing but painful. While it is common for individuals to get itchy skin, psoriasis takes it one step further. Not only does the skin itch but it becomes thick, red, inflamed, and sometimes areas of plaque develop on highly visible areas of the skin, including the scalp, back, knees, and elbows. These areas can be sore, itchy, and painful, making it difficult to do even the simplest of tasks such as walking or sleeping. Some patients have mild psoriasis while others may have more severe, persistent types of psoriasis that can greatly impact their overall quality of life.
How is psoriasis treated?
- Steroids
- Topical medications (vitamin D and A)
- Anthralin
- Specialized moisturizers
- Oral prescription medications
- Injectible medications known as “biologics”
- Medication injections
When patients have moderate to severe psoriasis but are reluctant to take an oral medication or use an injection, light therapy (phototherapy) can be used. Light therapy is highly effective with not only active psoriasis but also keep psoriasis from forming, as a preventative solution. Dr. Bryan Selkin finds the results of light therapy are enhanced by adding in topicals and other typical psoriasis treatment. By combining therapies, patients may be able to see results faster. LIght treatment for psoriasis is covered by nearly all insurance plans, and our office assists patients in obtaining the necessary approval and goes over the benefits in detail.
How does a patient get psoriasis?
Unfortunately, there is no specific and definite cause that has been found for psoraisis.. Studies continue to find that there is an abnormality in the white blood cells called T-cells in patients who have psoriasis, causing a possible immune response that results in the development of inflammation. However, this concept has not been fully studied or proven yet to give us an idea of not only how it forms, but how to keep psoriasis from occurring in patients who may be more prone to it.
