Plano dermatologist can diagnose atopic dermatitis with a regular skin-check up

Skin check up Plano with Dermatology CenterMillions of people suffer from atopic dermatitis, a type of eczema that can cause cracking, swelling, and crusting of the skin. Atopic dermatitis is most common in children, many of whom develop symptoms before their 5th birthday. If you or one of your children is currently experiencing itchy or inflamed skin, our Plano team specializes in skin check-ups to help diagnose and treat this common form of eczema.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of atopic dermatitis is itchy skin. The itching sensation causes many patients to scratch repeatedly, worsening the symptoms. The itch is often most uncomfortable in the evening, when people are free from daily distractions. Patients may also experience inflammation of the skin that can appear red or dry.

Some patients notice that areas of the skin most affected by the disease are scaly or covered in raised bumps. These bumps can become infected with scratching.

Risk Factors

Atopic dermatitis is caused by a combination of genes and environmental factors. People who live in areas low levels of humidity seem to be at an increased risk. Studies have also shown that patients who suffer from asthma or seasonal allergies may be at increased risk. Harsh soaps and detergents, cold temperatures, and stress can worsen the symptoms.

Treatment

Diagnosis begins with a physical examination of the skin and a review of medical and family history. Several appointments may be necessary to rule out other possibilities for the skin irritation, such as allergies.

Teeth discoloration happens to many patients who have an otherwise healthy smile. If you want to brighten your teeth or remove those tough stains left from years of a morning coffee habit, call Rose Hill Dental at 972-985-9003 to schedule a teeth whitening session today.
