Plano dermatologist describes the different types of birthmarks
At the Center of Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery, Dr. Bryan Selkin and his staff of professionals provide diagnosis and treatment for a variety of skin, hair, body, and nail concerns. A common issue for patients in an aesthetic sense is the presence of birthmarks. Plano, TX area patients are often interested in learning about the different types of birthmarks which may be present.
What are birthmarks?
Birthmarks have no known cause. They are typically present at the time of birth, hence the name. Sometimes they are temporary and will fade or disappear over time, and other times these birthmarks may be present for a lifetime. There are two types of birthmarks including vascular birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks.
Types of birthmarks
- Vascular – vascular birthmarks are those caused by malformation of the blood vessels. The most common varieties of vascular birthmarks are macular stains, port-wine stains, and hemangiomas. These can occur anywhere on the body and may be short-term or long-term.
- Pigmented – a pigmented birthmark is caused by excess pigmentation in the area. Types of pigmented birthmarks seen at the Center for Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Surgery include café-au-lait birthmarks, Mongolian spots, and moles.
What can be done about birthmarks?
In most situations, birthmarks are not troublesome. However, some patients may feel extremely self-conscious about their appearance, especially when they are on very visible areas. Patients can discuss with their dermatologist options for lightening or removing birthmarks.
