What is my child’s rash?

In many cases, rashes in children are atopic dermatitis, or eczema. Eczema is a chronic skin condition that can have frequent flare-ups accompanied with severe itching. The rash can become raw and exposed, potentially leading to infection.

When does eczema occur?

Most cases of infantile eczema occur at or around 3 months old. Usually, the rash first appears on the face, and then on the arms and legs, although it can occur anywhere on the body. Older children with eczema may notice outbreaks around the creases of the elbows, wrists, or knees.

What causes eczema?

Children who have a family history of eczema are at an increased risk. Flare-ups can be caused by triggers such as perfumes, pollen, soap, shampoo, or any other irritating substance. In about one-third of the cases, there are also food allergies present. The most common ones are cow’s milk and eggs.

How can I control my child’s eczema?

Even though eczema is a chronic condition without a known cure, flare-ups can be controlled by following some simple guidelines:

• Avoid harsh soaps and bubble baths
• Avoid rough, scratchy clothing materials
• Use a humidifier in the home
• Avoid animals that trigger flare-ups
• Take short (5 -10) minute baths
• After baths, apply moisturizing cream while skin is damp
