Birthmarks are often present immediately upon birth or develop soon after and can last a lifetime. While most birthmarks are nothing to be worried about, many Plano, TX patients choose to have them evaluated for proper diagnosis and in some cases, to discuss removal.
What are pigmented birthmarks?
Pigmented birthmarks are caused by an overdevelopment of pigment in a specific area on the skin. They differ from vascular birthmarks, which are a cluster of malformed blood vessels. Pigmented birthmarks include three specific varieties:
- Moles – moles are flat or raised spots on the skin that may be anywhere from brown to black in color. They are usually not problematic, unless there are specific changes seen in their size, shape, or color, which may indicate a more serious issue. Moles are often evaluated regularly during skin cancer screenings.
- Mongolian spots – certain ethnicities such as African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics may notice a discoloration called Mongolian spots. These spots appear almost blueish-gray and are typically seen around the back and buttocks area. These are rarely permanent and typically fade by the time a child reaches the age of five.
- Café-au-lait birthmarks – these harmless spots often develop on the body at birth and sometimes more can appear over time. They are permanent and are notable by their creamy, coffee coloration. They can be large or small.
