Patients can end up with fine lines and wrinkles for a number of reasons. For some it’s prolonged sun exposure. For others, its genetic predisposition, or perhaps it’s simply the natural aging process. Whatever the reason, Dr. Selkin may suggest dermal fillers to combat wrinkles and lines.
Restylane & Juvéderm
Restylane is used primarily to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face. It is made of hyaluronic acid and is injected into the skin in areas of prominent wrinkles and folds. It works to add volume to provide a younger appearance. Some side effects, including minor redness, bruising and swelling can occur but usually disappear within a week. Restylane injections produce results that last for several months and patients can maintain those results with regular injections.
Juvéderm is another hyaluronic acid filler, similar to Restylane. Juvéderm can last slightly longer than Restylane and has a higher concentration of the active ingredient. Juvéderm comes as a thinner “Ultra” form for areas like the lips and for finer augmentation and filling, and as an “Ultra Plus” form for deeper lines and folds such as the nasolabial folds and marionette lines (corner of mouth).
After either procedure, it is best to avoid exercise for at least 8 hours and to also avoid hot showers. You may apply ice to the injection areas or gently massage them to reduce lumps. Treatment sites will gradually soften over several weeks after the procedure.
