When should you start your kid’s dental care?

We recommend scheduling your child’s first visit to Sweet Tooth Children’s Dentistry when the first tooth comes through, or by baby’s first birthday. However, it is never too soon to get your child accustomed to the concept of dental care.

Our team provides guidance on cleaning your infant’s gums and teeth, and is happy to discuss issues of concern to parents such as:

  • Pacifiers
  • Thumb sucking
  • Baby bottle tooth decay
  • Nutrition
  • Oral development, speech, and breathing

We do our best to make sure the initial visit (and each one after that) is relaxed and low-key. These positive experiences become the foundation for a good attitude toward dental health, for life.

Our children’s dentists focus on prevention

Children normally get 20 primary teeth from the ages of about 6 to 33 months of age. Though these teeth will eventually be shed to make way for secondary teeth, they serve important functions. Baby teeth help your child learn to eat and to speak clearly. Baby teeth also create the pathways for permanent teeth to emerge. If a baby tooth must be extracted prematurely, a space maintainer keeps others from shifting into the gap.

Our dentists have advanced training and plenty of experience in restorative procedures. We prefer, however, helping children avoid the need for fillings, baby root canals, and crowns.

At regular six-month checkups, teeth and gums are gently yet thoroughly cleaned. The dentist monitors oral development carefully, ready to intercept potential problems. We suggest topical fluoride treatment for fortified enamel that resists decay, and sealants to reduce risk of cavities in molars.
