Dental implants can be a great thing for many patients. However, Dr. Medlock does not freely recommend them to just anyone. There are situations in which they are helpful, however, in some circumstances, patients may be better off with an alternative treatment.
 
It is important that patients understand what dental implants are. Dental implants are posts that are made from 100% zirconium (ceramic). This material is used for dental implants because it is biocompatible with the body and a wonderful non-metal alternative to the traditional titanium dental implants placed by other area dentists. The posts are surgically implanted into the bone underneath the gums of the mouth, and are left to heal. This allows the process of osseointegration to occur, which is the stimulation of bone growth that helps hold the implant in place. Dr. Medlock then places a dental crown on top of the post to act as a false tooth, restoring the patient’s smile after tooth loss.
 
Dental implants are typically recommended for patients who need root canal treatment. Dental implants in West Palm Beach are suggested instead, because root canal treatments can leave behind bacteria. A root canal is when the dentist needs to go into the innermost portion of the tooth to remove the dental pulp, which houses the nerves, blood supply, and tissue that keeps a tooth “alive.” Instead, it is recommended that these teeth are extracted and a dental implant be considered in its place.
 
Dental implants can also be used for patients who have been struggling with denture use. Dentures have a tendency to change rapidly in fit and function, and dental implants can be placed and used in conjunction with dentures to provide the stability and strength patients want from their teeth for full chewing and biting efficiency.
