There are several types of dental implants available. The most widely used type is the titanium metal dental implant. However, at our practice, we avoid the placement of any metal in the smile and instead recommend patients consider a more biocompatible solution such as zirconium implant. Dr. Elizabeth Keith prefers placing these implants because they are more aesthetically pleasing and healthier for the body.
 
Implants are placed with oral surgery. Dr. Elizabeth Keith starts the process with x-rays to determine if patients have enough jaw bone to support the implant and ensure a successful placement. Dental implants require the bone of the jaw for placement as this is what holds them in place and gives them the strength they need to function properly. Once the process of osseointegration occurs, during which the bone wraps around the implant to provide it stability, then the restoration of the implant begins. A complete dental crown is fabricated and placed over the top with an abutment to finish the restoration process. The crown and implant function the same as a natural tooth and is one of the best ways of repairing the smile after tooth loss and extraction.
