All -Retor GD. A brief overview of the Russian gamdev and a little bitter.

Today I would like to talk about what is the current Russian game industry and consider the work a little from the inside, without a tight analysis of specific professions. After all, you have not written what profession to make out.:) Again, I will write everything based on my experience and my friends.

As I said earlier, our game industry is mostly – these are mobile games. Moreover, a significant part of these games are very bad. Even finding their game in Googlpley, you cannot connect them with a company from a neighboring court. Everything is done on the unity engine, kaneshnage. I divided them by the degree of wretchedness. Let’s look at the most common companies in the modern Russian game.

1. Bottom. Companies that make games, spending about 56 man-hours on this. These hours include the work of a modeller, programmer, artist, content manager and tester. For three days, purchased models from the unity of the Assetter are gathering and remade, editing in textures, if necessary, and are given to the programmer. The programmer writes the simplest engine, inserts models and art, and then gives it all to the tester. He sighs heavily and plunges into a cesspool with his head. Further there are trading about bugs: “This is a bug! No, this is not a bug. Dates are burning. 111 “and the game is released in the stroke. In the worst case, the production of the game takes two days. On the first day, the modeller rivets the models from what is, and in the second-the programmer collects this in the game, adding a significant amount. Such a scheme was used in my memory only once.

I happened to work in one fairly large company, where there was a department of poorly qualified guys who made games in a day or two. Of course, in two days a mobile game is not made and at the exit it turned out to be terribly looking, funny shit. These games were needed only to verify the reaction of the audience (but in this bottomless ears of shit we will dive in the following articles of the cycle, prepare the bathyscaphe, bitch). In most cases, when the production of a full cycle takes all 56 hours, the game is already made as an independent product for making money. Then the modeller has three whole days to collect a normal pack of models from purchased asses and make changes to them. Sometimes even manages to make a model, as they say, from scratch. But it turns out far from always. Having received the model, the programmer takes one of the finished engines and changes it for a specific game. For example: need races in the city. Venatical scripts of opponents and configures of machines (programmer) takes from the old game, where the action took place, for example, in the desert. Correns bugs and adds something new, for example-a store where you can open new cars for victory. Gives the tester, he grabs his head and understands that somewhere there, in the past, he made the wrong choice. I had to go to the wipers.

Such games rarely download more than Davinci’s Gold Casino a hundred thousand times, but income from one game allows you to maintain an employee for a month (but this is not exactly). These games from advertising are monetized. Every third race is an advertising video, every third exit on the menu is a video again, looked at the advertisement – opened a wheelbarrow. Any reason is used to show advertising. Such games are invented either by the developers themselves or the head of the department. Less commonly – a marketer or gamemerator.

2. Donyshko. Games for the production of which takes up to a month. Such games are more complicated than ordinary racing or dressing trousers. Usually these are survivals. Type: “Survival simulator in Africa” or something more unusual. For example, Opus Magnum of your humble servant – “Burger Chef: Cooking Simulator”. Engines for such games are written from scratch and, sometimes, in production occupy up to two working weeks.

The engine of the inconsistent is called not only the unit, which is actually a game engine, but also a set of scripts and objects on the basis of which you can build a game. For example: a racing engine is a set of scripts for calculating checkpoints, time, circles, scripts for machines and their settings. The store engine is scripts that can be pulled out of one game and get in another completely working system for selling something for the game currency. These are the subtleties 🙂

In such games, there is definitely a game designer and a tiny GDD (a gamedic document that describes what the game is). Modellers in such projects are already doing a lot of content from scratch. Occasionally even manage to make animation.

The production process looks like this: the bosses or content manager find a hype theme and decide, in very general terms, what the game should look like. The game designer writes a document where it describes the game mechanics in more detail. Sets the task for the modeliers. Those give the developer agreed with the gameplay, he makes the game, inserts art and UI (user interface – all sorts of buttons and menus) that the artist, advertising, and gives it to the tester. Several testing iterations are passing and the game is transmitted to the content manager for release to the market. He comes up with a hype description and laid out the game on a googleple. Everything, spectley pie, you can chop butter.

3. Almost a gamdeal. Games whose production process takes up to three months. Everything is the same as in the previous version, only the time is more, and the quality is higher.
