Botox™ - Related FAQ's

Q: I had botox for my crows feet but the lines still show when I smile wide. Why is this?

A: Not all crows feet are caused by squinting the eyelid muscles and it is only those lines that are treated with Botox, otherwise, the smile muscles would have to be treated and this would cause difficulty with having a normal smile, difficulty brushing the teeth and even eating. Also singing and speech would be affected.

Q: My lower cheeks bulge outwardly. My dentist said I have TMJ, a joint problem of the jaw. He said Botox injections can help. Is this true?

A: Yes, if done by an expert, the reduction in strength of the masseter muscle can cause less girth of the muscle of the cheek/jaw. The face then develops a more slim view when seen from the front.

Q: I had such a bad slash in my face when I fell through a glass door that the plastic surgeon who sewed me up suggested I also get Botox injections. Can this help?

A: It has been theorized that Botox injections of the adjacent tissue may induce less tightening and contraction thereby making the scar heal better and prettier.

Q: I had Botox treatment just an hour ago and have been invited to go skating. Is this OK?

A: There is no evidence that this exertion would be a problem after Botox as long as you're not bending over to tie your skates. We recommend not bending over or lying flat for four hours after Botox injections.

Q: I have many criss-cross lines on my lower eyelids. Why did my doctor say he couldn't do Botox there?

A: Injecting the lower eyelids can be done by doctors, off-label (not an FDA-approved use) but there is a risk for some patients that there lower eyelid skin will droop too much after the Botox and they can get a dry eye because the tears no longer bathe the eyes; instead the tears fall over the sagging lower eyelid making it appear that you are making more tears. Some patients only have a couple of horizontal lines below the eyelashes and as long as they don't have a history of lower eyelid swelling, then I have injected 1 or 1.5 units of Botox very carefully as this off-label use to produce an improvement in their skin texture.
