Q: I have very bad deep vertical lines of my upper lip. My lipstick has bled into them and many years ago I had a Dermabrasion of my lips during a facelift. It got better, but they're still there. What else can be done?

A: Fillers are often done and Restylane and Juvederm can work well. Sometimes, minute doses of Botox (off-label use) with one unit per insertion, four insertions along the upper cutaneous lip, can decrease the strong muscular pursing that creases the skin into the undesired wrinkles. The fillers have been shown to work even better and last longer with this combination. Botox in this area can cause undesired complications such as an elongated upper lip and a flatter lip, and problems with speech, eating, singing, drinking, etc. So be sure to see an experienced Botox provider.

Q: Can I have an allergy suddenly to Botox? I had been seeing a dermatologist in NYC for my Botox but then moved to Florida. After my first injection I had swelling and itching there.

A: Botox allergy is exceedingly rare. It might be an agent in the liquid used to mix the Botox in the vial to which you are reacting. You may need to see an allergist for testing. Let the doctor in Florida provide the allergist with exactly the same chemicals as used in your treatment.

Q: If Botox will help my headaches, how long can I expect relief?

A: Often headaches stay away as long as the muscles don't contract. This can be for three months, sometimes up to four and others, less.

Q: I had my first Botox treatment five days ago and it went well but I had been very anxious about it before hand. If I were to get a droop how many more days before it might show itself?

A: Probably if you haven't noticed it by now, it won't happen. Botox starts to be effective within three days and the results increase for the first two weeks. If by 14 days you have no ill-effects, it is doubtful that any would develop.

Q: I have heard of flat eyebrows from Botox and I don't want them. What should my doctor do to avoid them?

A: If there is a tendency for you to start having sagging of the eyebrows without Botox, then your forehead above the eyebrows shouldn't be treated, even high up on the forehead. You may not be able to have the horizontal forehead lines treated because these lines will disappear when the muscle is relaxed but that forehead muscle helps lift the eyebrows.
