Q: I went to my NYC dermatologist and complained that I didn't like the smile folds and especially didn't like the deep corners of my mouth. It's as if the lips curve down so I'm constantly sad, but I'm a very happy person and want to appear that way. The doctor said he could use Botox to lift the corners but then during my fillers and botox session he never injected botox near my lips but injected near my jaw and I never complained about my jaw or jowl. Why did he do this?A: It has been found that the best placement for Botox is near the base of the muscle that lowers the corner of the lip. By relaxing this muscle, the Botox will prevent the DAO muscle from pulling the lip down thereby unopposing the strong lifting action of the muscles above the lip. If your doctor had injected too close to the lip, it might have affected other muscles that are important in the function of your mouth and appearance. He is doing what is correct to give you the best chance of maintaining a symmetric good smile, and function of the mouth.
Q: Can I have Botox to decrease my turkey neck?
A: If your turkey neck is related to the platysmal muscle bands that hang down, yes. If it is related to fat accumulation, then no. The muscle bands when contracting tend to hang low but if relaxed with Botox, can recontour to make a better angle at the neck.
Q: I had botox for my glabellar folds four weeks ago but the lines are still there, why?
A: If your muscles aren't contracting, you will find that the skin will become smoother, in all likelihood, after the skin is no longer summoned to accordion over the contracting muscle.
Q: I had Botox in my forehead three days ago and look mean now. What can I do?
A: Usually it is best to wait up to two weeks before having more Botox. In this way, you are allowing the Botox to have full effect and you don't run the risk of adjusting something that will adjust itself. If you did rush in to have more Botox now, it might be too much. There are exceptions and if it looks too unusual, it might be that you didn't have any Botox in areas you need and your doctor can add more units there to make it appear better.
