CoolSculpting/Zeltiqâ„¢™ - Related FAQ's

Q: My right love handle is much larger than my left. Can Zeltiq treat one side more than the other?

A: Not really, as there are no significant energy levels that would be adjusted, other than setting less time for one area than the other. I would consider, if there is a true asymmetry of fat volume rather than a skoliosis issue, to treat both sides the same for the first treatment and continue with other treatments just on the larger side. Repeat Zeltiq CoolSculpting can be done every two to three months, for a few treatments.

Q: If I had inguinal hernia surgery a month ago, can I have CoolSculpting now?

A: Yes, there should be no problem with having Zeltiq a month after hernia surgery if your surgeon says that you have healed well. This might be different for an umbilical or other type of abdominal, not inguinal hernia surgery.

Q: How do I know if I should do Zeltiq or liposuction? I saw my NYC dermatologist who suggested CoolSculpting but if I saw a plastic surgeon, would they suggest liposuction?

A: As a dermatologic surgeon, I perform liposuction as well as supervise Zeltiq CoolSculpting procedures in my practice. There are different reasons to choose liposuction or non-invasive treatment. If one is very thin but just want some more minimal reduction in the abdomen, Zeltiq may induce reduction with a smooth contour which could be difficult with liposuction when there is minimal fat to remove. On the other hand, some patients would need at least three treatments of CoolSculpting and still not receive as much fat reduction as that which would be expected from Liposuction. Some patients just don't want surgery or have medical problems or take medications that prevent them from undergoing elective surgery. CoolSculpting would be ideal for those patients.

Q: After Zeltiq can I regain weight in the same area if I overeat?

A: Yes! The left over cells can engorge more on fat. Also, the areas that didn't have CoolSculpting can also gain the weight.

Q: I have bulging outer thighs, can I have CoolSculpting?

A: There may be new applicators that are designed for this area in the future, but now we can use a smaller applicator if it fits on this region on your thigh. Some patients have had very good improvement.
