CoolSculpting/Zeltiqâ„¢™ - Related FAQ's

Q: Can I do Zeltiq CoolSculpting if I had liposuction in the same area three months ago?

A: There should be no problem with you having CoolSculpting by Zeltiq, if you had liposuction three months ago, unless you have an abdominal hernia and that's the area you want treated. You should check with the liposuction surgeon if that is the case, but if it is in a different area, such as the lovehandles, then there shouldn't be a problem.

Q: I work out every day and watch my diet but I absolutely can't shrink my lovehandles past where they are now. I have a coagulation problem and shouldn't have surgery because of the risk of bleeding. Should I consider mesotherapy?

A: Before you consider a procedure that is not well established and is not considered standard of care in the United States, such as mesotherapy or lipodissolve, you should consider CoolSculpting by Zeltiq. Fat cells are well known to be sensitive to freezing and can die from freezing. The Zeltiq equipment freezes the fat and it only takes one hour. During the treatment it is relatively painless (it takes some accommodation in the first 5 - 10 minutes to get used to the pressure and temperature) and patients watch movies or read books, listen to music or get work done. During the months after treatment, the fat cells that die, get dissolved and there is a 40 % reduction in volume. Some patients who have a significant volume to treat, and still don't agree to have liposuction, undergo three treatments, two to three months apart. There is a cumulative improvement, that can be considerable compared to no treatment at all, but in each instance, the reality is that liposuction would produce a better improvement in fat reduction.

Q: I am a model and have to look good in three weeks for a shoot. Can I have CoolSculpting by Zeltiq or should I have liposuction?

A: Three weeks after liposuction you are still swollen and may be quite red at the insertion sites. There may be unevenness with swelling. Zeltiq's CoolSculpting can improve the contour of fat bulges but it takes time to respond and there can be inflammation after the procedure to make the clothing not feel looser for several weeks. There is a four month waiting period before one loses about 20% of fat volume so you may not benefit in time to have either procedure.
