CoolSculpting/Zeltiqâ„¢™ - Related FAQ's

Q: Do I have to avoid anything special before having CoolSculpting by Zeltiq?

A: Zeltiq's CoolSculpting can cause some temporary bruising from the suction, so minimize if possible any mediation, over-the-counter or herbs that might induce more bruising. Please don't stop your prescription medication such as Coumadin or Pradaxa, Plavix (or aspirin if told by a physician that you need to take it). Rather, inform the doctor during the consultation of CoolSculpting that you take these medications.

Q: Should I have CoolSculpting or laser liposuction?

A: These procedures are very different. CoolSculpting produces no down time as the Zeltiq unit is non-invasive. There may be bruising, so if you plan to wear a skimpy bathing suit after the procedure, then allow two to three weeks for it to go away. Liposuction causes a lot of swelling and bruising usually, there are more risks as it is a surgical procedure. Liposuction can remove more fat in one sitting then a few non-invasive Zeltiq CoolSculpting procedures.

Q: Does taking thyroid hormone for my hypothyroidism prevent me from having CoolSculpting?

A: No, Zeltiq's fat freezing device, CoolSculpting therapy, can be done with patients who take thyroid medication.

Q: Can I have my flabby upper outer arms treated with CoolSculpting?

A: Yes, as long as the physician finds an applicator that will fit the upper arm skin and fat well, then you can have this off-label treatment. It appears to safe but the company may be developing an arm-specific applicator.

Q: Will CoolSculpting hurt my skin if it freezes and kills the fat cells?

A: The adipocytes (fat cells) are more sensitive and die sooner than the epidermal cells, so the skin cells are not affected adversely by the Zeltiq's equipment.

Q: I want to get pregnant in three months or so. Can I have Zeltiq now?

A: Yes, there is no problem in having CoolSculpting now. The freezing of the fat does not affect the ovaries.

Q: Is there a device I can buy and use on myself to give me the same results as Zeltiq?

A: CoolSculpting has been proven in medical studies via ultrasound imaging, to reduce 20% of fat volume four months after one treatment. Devices that can be found by "googling" are not subjected to these studies and probably do not produce long term improvement. Temporary reduction is one thing, but Zeltiq's CoolSculpting allows for permanent reduction of those cells that die from the freezing and then are metabolized by the body.
