CoolSculpting/Zeltiqâ„¢™ - Related FAQ's

Q: Can someone have lumps after Zeltiq CoolSculpting for fat reduction?

A: There is a possibility that not unlike liposuction, cellulite might exist without being easily noticed before the treatment but the cellulite becomes more obvious as surrounding fat decreases. I am not aware of fatty cysts developing after CoolSculpting, nor have we had patients complain of this after Zeltiq, to-date. The normal result is a smooth contour of fat volume reduction.

Q: I had a baby six months ago and my skin is droopy. I think I may need a tummy tuck eventually but I want to work out a lot first in the next year. I don't think I'll have any more children but I'm wondering if I can have CoolSculpting and if it would work to tighten my tummy.

A: Zeltiq's CoolSculpting done in our NYC office is done on patients who have had a consultation first with one of our physicians. We want to make sure that patients are candidates for the procedure. If there is a lack of fat volume over the muscle wall, and it is the skin that has stretched out, then a skin tummy tuck would be better. If the connective tissue layer holding back the muscle wall has weakened then a muscle and possibly skin abdominoplasty is indicated. In those cases the CoolSculpting would probably not work well. You might lose more fat with diet and exercise as you regain your shape post delivery in the next six months, and if there is still a fat deposit at that time, then Zeltiq might provide you with a good result in fat reduction, not loose skin tightness. Some people improve the skin tone with Thermage radiofrequency treatments. Deep focused ultrasound with Ultherapy is being investigated to improve the skin texture for this condition and Fraxel Restore treatments can provide some laser improvement to the texture of the skin as well but doesn't treat the fat.

Q: Is having diverticulitis a reason not to have abdominal CoolSculpting by Zeltiq?

A: You shouldn't have the treatment during an active bout of inflammatory diverticulitis. Once the episode is treated and you've recovered, having stable diverticulosis should not be a contraindication to having the CoolSculpting. Your doctor who manages your intestinal disease could speak with the physician who will be treating you with Zeltiq's CoolSculpting to get approval.
