NYC Dermatology - Does treatment differ for men and women?

The treatment for men and women do not differ, per se. It is the condition that is different and the treatment is dependent on the condition.

For example, for neck liposuction, where the neck is full and the patient wants to improve the angle of the neck by reducing fatty volume underneath, the chin, neck and the pull between the Adam’s apple and the chin, and the bearded skin of the patient has to be taken into consideration. Typically, the skin of a man is thicker than that of a woman, and the retraction or the improvement of that angle is a little less than that in a woman. Therefore, the doctor has to prepare the gentleman for that and the doctor will be slightly more aggressive in this particular type of surgery.

In terms of laser resurfacing, there is no difference in terms of hair removal. Injections for wrinkles, there is no difference. Liposuction for most body parts, certain areas such as the male breast or gynecomastia where liposuction is more of an approved treatment than a woman who needs a slight breast lift, are the same. Liposuction on a female breast is somewhat controversial. Love handles in a man tend to bruise more because it is more fibrous tissue meaning more collagen and they have to be made aware of that by their doctor, but the treatment is really not that different.

In terms of tattoo removal and laser treatments for brown spots, the treatments approached are the same. There can be general issues however that do not hold up for every patient certainly, but since most men don’t wear makeup, doctors are very astute to caution gentlemen about certain procedures that are known to cause bruising so that they are aware of their downtime. The doctor will certainly tell and discuss the bruising with female patients, but most of them are more inclined even if they don’t wear makeup to agree to use some kind of concealer to hide a bruise for one to two weeks after a procedure.

Again, while the procedures for skin treatments for men and women are not very different, there are some differences, such as skin texture, possibility of bruising and the treatment itself, that have to be taken into account when a man or a woman goes in for skin treatments. As always, it is very important that patients speak to a doctor and know all the details of any procedure before undertaking it.
