Cosmetic Fillers - I was overseas and had a filler injected into my cheeks six months ago and liked the result, but it recently swelled after I had a tooth extraction. What could have happened?

Swelling can occur from teeth extraction and the fluid can accumulate where the filler was injected. If, however, you have pain in the area of the swelling and if it’s red, a biofilm could have occurred during the injection or after. Bacteria can seed around the product and produce a capsule. This capsule can get broken or activated and localized inflammation and infection can occur. If the tooth had an absess or infected pocket, then bacteria could have spread to the filler and you might need antibiotics. You should see your doctor for an evaluation.

I am interested in making my cheeks bigger. Over time they have sunken in and I look old! What can I do?

Panfacial volumization or facial augmentation has become a very popular concept. The face doesn’t really fall because of gravity but a lack of support as the fat goes away in our supporting structure of the face. Fillers such as fat injections, Radiesse, Perlane and Juvederm Ultraplus are used commonly to fill in the depressed areas and help support the face once again. Sculptra is a “seed” in that it doesn’t fill right away but your collagen grows as a response to the Sculptra and then slowly over a few months and about three treatments with Sculptra, the volume increases. Facial volumization with fillers is not a replacement for a facelift and is often used in conjunction with facelifts for tightening and volume rejuvenation.

When will I see the result of my fat injections?

Fat injections will reach their mature appearance about three to six months after the procedure. Most of it is seen at three months. If someone is due to have a series of several fat injections, then the earliest I tend to repeat them is at three months but others have waited six to more months before the next treatment.
