Fraxel Treatments

For many years, dermatologists have performed skin resurfacing for their patients. Today, the resurfacing process is gentler and kinder to the skin. In Dr. Ron Shelton’s Midtown Manhattan practice, men and women can improve the look and the overall health of their skin with fractional laser resurfacing.

We use the Fraxel line of lasers to address various items of concern such as fine lines and wrinkles, poor texture, sun damage, loss of elasticity, acne and acne scarring and more. This non-ablative form of skin resurfacing is less aggressive than conventional CO2 laser treatment but still packs quite a punch.

The way that fractional laser treatment works is by taking tiny columns of damaged collagen from the skin using specific wavelengths of light. This is different from CO2 treatment in that entire layers of skin cells are not removed. Due to the targeting of miniscule areas of skin and the targeting of deeper skin cells, the recovery from fractional treatments is very short. Two of the three Fraxel laser treatments affect only the deeper layer of skin. Fraxel Dual uses two different wavelengths, one of which also mildly affects superficial skin cells.

Obtain beautiful skin with gentle treatment

Fraxel treatments are performed by Dr. Shelton or one of his highly trained staff in our Modern dermatological facility. The visit begins with the cleansing of the skin. We provide you with protective eyewear, and may apply a water based gel solution. During Fraxel treatment, pulses of laser light are delivered, passing through the superficial tissues into deeper cells, where damaged collagen is heated. The sustained “damage” from thermal energy speeds up the growth of new collagen in skin cells, leading to fresher, healthier skin. Though fractional laser treatment is called resurfacing, there is no removal of skin during this treatment.

Fraxel resurfacing is very gentle and produces very mild effects such as redness and swelling. It is possible to resume normal activities right away and to apply makeup immediately after treatments. In order to promote excellent healing and long lasting results, we highly recommend the daily application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen product.

In the weeks that follow each Fraxel treatment, collagen continues to build up in the deep layers of the skin. Gradually, skin looks tighter, more vibrant, and generally healthy.
