Liposuction - Related FAQ's

Q: I have smooth skin on my abdomen and want liposuction to remove excess fat. Will I be left with cottage cheese surface?

A: Usually the skin after liposuction maintains its preoperative smoothness but there is a risk of developing irregular contours and depressions. No surgeon can guarantee this won’t happen, but there is less risk with those surgeons who are experienced. If a patient has irregular skin before surgery then there is a greater chance of irregular skin after liposuction.

Q: I read on line about someone who had laser liposuction and now has a burn wound. Is this common?

A: No, a burn type of wound is uncommon after any liposuction but the risks are slightly greater in ultrasonic and laser-assisted liposuction. The right technique must be used and it is important to see an experienced provider.

Q: If I have liposuction on my abdomen, how many times should I plan on having the surgery?

A: Normally, one. Some people do need a small secondary procedure on an area that needs to be flattened but this could be a very small focus and easily done. Some patients find themselves undergoing further liposuction on areas not previously removed as they are quite happy with the results on the body site previously treated.

Q: I had liposuction on my thigh and have an indent. What can be done?

A: Sometimes fat injections are done, but you should wait three to six months before any revision is done as this allows a better result.

Q: If I see that there is more fat to remove after I had liposuction, when can I have another procedure?

A: Revisions on liposuction are less than 10% of cases, but we normally recommend waiting for six months to improve the appearance, as the body will do much itself to make things better. You shouldn’t rush in to revise surgically, what mother nature will do herself. Sometimes what looks irregular, is not excess fat but retained fluid / swelling that makes the contour puffy in some areas. Allow the body to reduce this fluid puffiness before you have a surgeon rush in and do unnecessary surgery.
