Q: My sister had laser-assisted liposuction and she has an area of numbness on her thigh. Will this go away?A: It is not uncommon to have patchy areas of sensitivity or numbness after any type of liposuction. Some patients, who have had SmartLipo or other laser-assisted liposuction procedures, or ultrasonic liposuction, have had temporary numbness as those who have had it after conventional tumescent liposuction. Usually, but not always, the sensation returns to normal but this can take many months.
Q: I had liposuction and was wearing the wrong garment. I know have an indentation in my thigh where the garment’s seam is located. Will this go away?
A: Usually there is no long term problem from the garment. If you recently had surgery and realize there was a problem with the wrong-fitting garment, just change to the correct sized garment and the skin contour should work itself out.
Q: I had neck liposuction a month ago and I’m starting to see improvement in the shape but my skin is getting fine lines like wrinkles.
A: If the skin’s elasticity is not as good as it once was, the skin may develop tiny folds or wrinkles after neck liposuction. This tends to be limited to the neck area. Some improvement might occur with external ultrasound massage or radiofrequency devices.
Q: I had liposuction done last week on my abdomen and my vagina is very swollen and purple, should I be concerned?
A: This is quite typical to be swollen and bruised in the vulva of women and scrotum and penis of men after liposuction of the abdomen. It goes away in three weeks usually.
Q: I just had liposuction of my neck and love the result. If I were to gain weight in the future, will I ruin my result by having it swell up again?
A: If fat is stored for excess calories after liposuction, then it can’t easily go back on the area that was treated as the storage cells are now reduced significantly so the fat will also be distributed to other areas.
Q: I had liposuction of my abdomen yesterday. Can I do ice packs today for swelling?
A: The compression garment is more important, but ice packs may help. You have to check with your surgeon if they allow you, specifically, based on your surgical situation, to use the ice. The skin may be numb so be careful not to cause frostbite to the skin by leaving it on too long.
