Liposuction - Related FAQ's

Q: I had liposuction two weeks ago and there is no difference. What went wrong?

A: Nothing went wrong in all likelihood. There is fluid accumulation, a swelling that is part of normal healing. This takes many weeks to fade. Be patient and with the compression garment usage, you will probably see continued improvement in fat reduction over three months or more after liposuction. Even a nominal 100ccs of supranatant fat removal in the lower abdomen can result in a great result in some patients.

Q: I had liposuction a few years ago with a great result. No excess fat and very smooth. I had to undergo abdominal surgery for an intestinal problem, and now I have lumps and bumps in my abdominal skin. Should I have liposuction again?

A: You may not be a candidate for liposuction if you had a smooth result before the abdominal surgery and after the liposuction. There may be the need for skin excision and redraping to effect a new contour by having an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

Q: I had liposuction on my abdomen and two weeks later I see yellow skin on my pubic area. Is something wrong?

A: Bruising is common in the suprapubic region after abdominal liposuction. There may be a delay before you see the discoloration. As long as there is no pain, you can make a routine followup appointment with your surgeon for reassurance. If there is a new pain in this area, then contact your surgeon.

Q: I am happy with my weight but not my shape. Can I have liposuction to change my large lower half that doesn't look as thin as my upper half?

A: Liposuction can improve the pear shape that many women are afflicted with through genetics. Many women find it hard to purchase a two piece outfit without purchasing two different size outfits and discarding the larger top and smaller lower piece that don't fit them. There are limits on how much can be removed and sometimes it is a bony framework that is the cause of the large size and not over accumulation of fat deposits in the waist or outer thighs.

Q: Can liposuction improve cellulite?

A: Yes, cellulite can be improved by liposuction but that is not a realistic goal with this procedure. You may obtain such a benefit, but the reason for having liposuction should be desiring fat reduction. There could even be an exacerbation of cellulite, and many people do not see any change in the cellulite. Endermologie, elashape, Thermage may help.
