Restylane™ - Related FAQ's

Q: Is there a limit to how much Restylane I can have each session?

A: Aesthetically, yes, but medically, the doctor can inject several syringes of hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm without problems having been reported. Some people need much more volume than others but it has to be done with the correct technique. In some areas, such as between the eyebrows and corner of the nose, the volume needs to be limited.

Q: My doctor injected Restylane and I got a bruise. It's been six weeks and my lip still looks bruised. Is this normal?

A: You may not have a bruise but a bluish color caused by the reflection of light from the Restylane being too superficial. Bruises usually are gone by two weeks, or slightly longer, but after three weeks, on the face, one has to wonder if it is a different reason for discoloration than a bruise. The Tyndall effect can be treated by injecting an enzyme, hyaluronidase, in the filler which will dissolve the filler and make the blue go away. Squeezing out the product can also be effective if the physician does this carefully and with sterile instruments.

Q: Can Restylane in the iip create soreness?

A: Yes. Juvederm, Restylane and other fillers can cause soreness in this most sensitive area. Usually it is temporary and goes away by itself. If however, there is a sore or scab then see your doctor.

Q: My lower eyelid skin has deep hollows since I was an adolescent, but it has worsened recently. Should I have an eyelift?

A: Usually, volume depletion is a cause for this appearance and injection of fillers, such as Restylane, a hyaluronic acid, is commonly done to replace the volume. I will usually inject this underneath the muscle to minimize lumpiness that can be seen under the thin eyelid skin if it were injected above the muscle. It gives a smooth and even contour through this approach. It also, is a safe filler, in that if there is a concern on the physician's part that the filler needs to be reversed, the filler can be dissolved by injecting it with hyaluronidase.

Q: Should I have Juvederm or Restylane for fillers in my lip?

A: Many physicians use one while many others use the other, without there being any substantial difference in the clinical results. Swelling can occur with either. Sometimes it feels that Juvederm can provide a smoother result but Restylane may help lift a tighter crease.
