Q: I had Sculptra injected today and my physician said I had two vials injected. I saw him use a total of six syringes. My friend had Sculptra injected last year and she doesn’t remember for sure, but thinks she only had a couple of syringes. Was she cheated?A: Sculptra is mixed with water and an anesthetic. The total volume used to mix the vial is up to the physician to decide how much is good for them and their patients. Some doctors use a one cc syringe and others use a 3cc syringe. Another variable that changes the picture, is how much the dilution is. Some doctors add 5ccs of fluid and others add up to 10ccs. The more the fluid is added, the more syringes are needed to add the same volume of the Sculptra.
Q: If I only need a little filler, can my surgeon give me less than a vial of Sculptra?
A: Yes. It is a choice that you and your physician can make. There might be a more economical choice to use a syringe of Radiesse or Perlane depending on the volume you need augmented.
Q: I had Sculptra and now have swelling and nodules, what should be done?
A: Nodules can happen and immediately. These would not be an allergic reaction but a physical property related to the particulate properties of the volumizer. Swelling may be related to many different reasons.
Q: Is Sculptra very painful? I really want to go through with it for my face but I’m afraid of pain.
A: Numbing cream is applied before hand, and there is local anesthetic mixed in with the Sculptra! Gentle technique and slow delivery in small amounts all help to minimize any discomfort with Sculptra injections.
Q: I went to a doctor to have Sculptra add volume for my cheeks but they added some to my temples and it looks great but one side is much greater than the other. It’s been one week. What can be done?
A: If the swelling, which probably is significant still at this time, doesn’t decrease and you remain asymmetric, then if the other side can afford to be filled more, than just that side can be treated. If however, the fuller side is too full or overcorrected, there is not much that can be done other than awaiting time for it to diminish. Usually Sculptra is given every six weeks for three treatments. If you only have had one treatment and won’t schedule the second and third treatments, it probably will resolve sooner than one year.
