What is laser skin tightening?

Elasticity is the key to firm, tight skin. This quality allows your skin to “snap” back into place when stretched. Elasticity is dependent on collagen and elastin, which are protein fibers in skin that behave similar to minute rubber bands. These fibers allow the skin to stretch, as well as pulling it back into place. Age, sun damage, pregnancy, weight changes, alcohol consumption, smoking, unhealthy eating habits, and other factors cause the breakdown of these fibers, leading to loose, sagging skin.

Laser therapy is a non-surgical technique for tightening skin by stimulating collagen and elastin development. It can smooth and firm the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and improving overall texture. This is a great option for rejuvenating skin, giving it a fresh, youthful appearance. It can be used on many areas of the body, including the face, chest, neck, and abdomen.

This innovative technique utilizes infrared frequency waves, which heat the dermis selectively. The collagen and elastin fibers naturally tighten in response, because heat causes portions to contract. This process is known as collagen remodeling. Laser treatment also stimulates new collagen production, which firms the skin and helps reduce wrinkles and lines.

We will perform an examination before recommending laser treatment. Pregnant women are advised to wait until after delivery before proceeding with treatment. For your safety, we do not recommend the procedure be performed on broken skin. It is important that you notify your doctor of skin sensitivities, such as easily scarring, susceptibility to herpes, or reaction to medications. You will be advised to avoid sun exposure or wear broad-spectrum sunscreen for about a month prior to laser skin tightening.

The procedure may take up to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. A series of sessions (usually three to six) is recommended to achieve optimal results. We use a cooling system during the procedure, to ensure that the outer layer of skin does not overheat. Results continue to improve, as collagen and elastin develops gradually over several months. At that time, a reassessment can be done to see if additional enhancement is desired.
