Pointers on Losing Weight Safely
One of the first thoughts that you might have when you want to lose weight is to reduce the amount of food that you eat. This may be a significant part of the solution but to get the best results, there are other factors that need to be considered. In fact, depending on the amount you reduce your food intake, eating less might even be dangerous to your health. So how does one lose weight effectively and safely? Here are some points one should consider when trying to lose weight:
- Beware of the Crash Diets
Most people think that trimming down the calories alone will cause you to shed off the unwanted excess body weight. Probably this is because of the constant advertising you hear about low-calorie food products and beverages. What you might not know is that this could be dangerous because when they decrease their calorie intake way to below the required levels, the body begins to digest the fats. Sounds good but it doesn’t actually. Burning fat requires a lot of energy. Since there is not much energy in the body to facilitate metabolism of fat, you will find yourself operating at a very slow pace leading to fatigue, illness and a weakened immune system.A low-calorie diet is also compensated for by the body by burning muscle. When you are on this type of diet you will have a tendency to revert back to your old eating habits ending up gaining back some, if not all the weight that you have shed off. This would consist mainly of fats. And since fats have more volume per mass than muscle, you end up having the same weight as before but more bulky. In losing weight, you should keep in mind that you really want to lose excess body fats only. However, one can try out eating small meals at more frequent intervals. This way your body will not think that it is being starved and will have a lesser tendency to store food as fat.
- Eat Properly
You may have considered junking the crash diet option but you should also not forget to watch what you are eating. Variety must always be considered so that one may be able to get the necessary nutrients from your diet. It is also healthier for you to eat food which is roasted, steamed or broiled rather than fried. Also of importance is to include adequate fiber in your diet. Frequent hydration with water is also necessary. - Pump Up lean Muscle Mass
Muscles burn calories when they work; they even do so at rest. Unlike fats which just lie around, bulge around the pants and dangle beneath the sleeves, muscles burn calories all-day round. With this fact, you can start weight loss by increasing muscle mass. The more muscles, the less fat will be left. This is attainable through working out with resistance exercises. Paradoxically, with more muscle mass it might seem that your body gets smaller but the weight stays the same. However, with continued effort you will reach a new balance at a healthier weight. - Engaging in Aerobics
Aerobics are not only good for your heart by increasing cardio-vascular endurance, but also helps by increasing lean muscle mass while simultaneously decreasing excess body fat. Also, aerobics can make your metabolic process more efficient and increase the rate, which can continue when you have finished exercising. Imagine burning fat efficiently while driving along the freeway or even while watching television; of course you have to do a serious work out first! - When Is it OK to Take Diet Pills
Prescription and Over-the-counter diet pills can affect the amount of weight you lose as you take steps to keep the weight off. However, one must be wary of the side-effects of these diet pills. For example, many of the diet pills that work the fastest to cause a reduction in weight are stimulants and can be associated with rapid heartbeat, irritability, and increase your blood pressure. This is the reason that they are restricted to short term usage usually for only 4 weeks or so at a time. There are however diet pills in the form of natural supplements that while they may not make the weight drop as quickly, ongoing loss of pounds occurs that is more sustainable for the long term. It is always prudent to consult with your physician before trying out these drugs and also to find out which type would be best for you.
In summary, losing weight does not always have to mean sacrifice and suffering. It actually means opening up to a fuller and healthier life. You do not have to feel bad about yourself look the way you do or not being able to do certain activities or wear certain clothes that you want to do. Losing weight means making positive adjustments.
