What is Acne Keloidalis Nuchae?

Acne Keloidalis Nuchae

Acne Keloidalis Nuchae is a condition that produces inflamed keloid-like areas, usually on the back of the neck or lower portion of the scalp. These inflamed hair follicles, which are most common in African American, Latino, and Asian men can leave patients with large scars if not treated.

Symptoms of Acne Keloidalis Nuchae

Symptoms usually emerge as red, pus-filled bumps that are often tender and itchy. When left untreated, these bumps will begin to develop into smaller scars that will join over time. These large and thick scars are known as keloids and they can cause hair loss. In rare cases, the lesions can transform into recessed pockets filled with pus that can leak a foul-smelling discharge.

Preventing and caring for Acne Keloidalis Nuchae

There are certain things that can exacerbate Acne Keloidalis Nuchae. Being aware of this can help prevent symptoms from occurring. If you do develop bumps, there are certain things you can do to prevent it from getting worse:

  • Patients should try to avoid wearing tight fitting head gear and tight collared shirts
  • Avoid short haircuts, oily hair products, and ultra-close shaving
  • Do not scratch or pick at bumps
  • Gently cleanse the area with non-abrasive cleaners
  • Use over-the-counter cortisone cream

Patients who think they may have Acne Keloidalis Nuchae should seek medical care from their dermatologist. An experienced team like the one at Dr. W dermatology can help reduce the risk of large scars and permanent hair loss.

Treating Acne Keloidalis Nuchae

Treatment is often very successful when done early. It may include a combination of topical creams and oral medications such as antibiotics or steroids. In addition, patients may benefit from dermatological procedures such as injections into the bumps, surgical excision, laser therapy, or cryotherapy.

Treatment varies by individual. For example, patients with dark skin are usually not candidates for cryotherapy due to the risk of hyperpigmentation. During your initial examination, Dr. Weaver and associates will perform a through medical evaluation of the area and recommend a treatment plan that works best for you. If you are in the Cinco Ranch or Katy area and you have red bumps or scars on the back of your neck or head, call today to have them evaluated.
