Addressing the causes of skin cancer in our Katy, TX dermatology practice, keeps your skin as healthy as possible

There is nothing like feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, this cannot be denied. However, it is important to take precautions to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Precautionary measures include the daily use of sunscreen, the avoidance of direct sunlight during peak times of day, and wearing protective clothing such as wide brimmed hats or long sleeves when possible. Skin protection also includes regular visits to your dermatologist, who understands the causes of skin cancer, and offers effective diagnosis and treatment in Katy, TX.
In our country, skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer experienced by adults of all ages. Dr. Seymour Weaver, a Board Certified dermatologist with offices in Katy and Houston, discusses the importance of prevention and regular skin evaluations for the earliest possible detection of skin cancer. With early detection and treatment, skin cancer has a high probability of cure.
What causes skin cancer?
Skin cancer is the result of damage to DNA in skin cells. There are different ways in which the DNA may become damaged, most relating to radiation. People who spend a lot of time in the sun, who use tanning beds, or who are exposed to radiation are at higher risk for the development of skin cancer. As skin cells become damaged, barely visible tumors may develop, changing, in size, color, and shape. Over time, pain and bleeding of tumors may occur. Aggressive forms of skin cancer may metastasize, or spread to other areas of the body.
Dermatologists regularly see with patients concerned about one of the three varieties of skin cancer. The first is basal cell carcinoma, which is the most commonly occurring skin cancer, comprising about 80 percent of diagnosed cases. Basal cell carcinomas, or BCCs, may look like a shiny bump, similar to a pimple, or may resemble a sore that will not heal.
Squamous cell carcinoma, or SCC, is another type of skin cancer. Appearing as a fast-growing bump or a crusty spot on the skin, SCCs account for about 16 percent of skin cancer diagnoses.
The type of skin cancer that poses the greatest concern is melanoma, the third most common type of skin cancer. The concern with melanoma is that these lesions may be difficult to detect because they appear as moles. Melanoma may occur in an existing mole, or may develop on its own. As skin care professionals, we educate our patients on the proper care of skin, and the recognition of suspicious lesions through home mole checks. Discolored or changing moles should be evaluated by your dermatologist right away.
