How to Eliminate Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots

Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots

By definition hyperpigmentation is the discoloration of particular areas of the skin such that the skin is darker in color as compared to the adjacent normal appearance. One of the major causes the uneven skin tone is referred to as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is due to the skin becoming darker in color as a result of some preceding condition such as a rash, acne, or skin infection for example.

There are also medical conditions specifically associated with hyperpigmentation such as melasma. Individuals with this disorder usually develop dark blotches on the cheeks, nose, upper lip, or forehead. Sun exposure causes the condition to appear and worsen due to a hormonal influence on the melanocytes or pigment producing cells. This condition often appears during pregnancy, but can occur at other times in life and also affect men.

There are also hereditary conditions associated with darkening and hyperpigmentation of the skin as well as darkening that can occur in association with weight gain and obesity.

Another causative factor is prescribed medication such as those used to treat high blood pressure and some chemotherapy drugs.

There are various treatment options availed to eliminate hyperpigmentation; all of which have the capacity to eliminate dark spots.

Although hyperpigmentation can cause ones confidence to be shaken there are different treatment options available, that different individuals can use in order to rectify the situation.

Many bleaching agents are available over the counter and might help with mild hyperpigmentation, but most of the individuals with extensive and stubborn cases end up in the office of a dermatologist.

For years, prescription strength hydroquinone used alone or in combination with other ingredients has been the first treatment offered. This medication inhibits the enzymes involved in melanin production and works on pigment that is in the upper layer of the skin closer to the surface.

When pigment is located deeper in the skin such as the dermal layer, topical creams become less effective at getting the darker coloration to go away. At this time, a variety of approaches can be utilized, including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser toning.

Depending upon the cause and type of hyperpigmentation present, treatment can be highly effective or sometimes disappointing. Rarely the condition can darken during treatment as a result of hydroquinone sensitivity causing a condition called ochronosis.
If this occurs this treatment has to be stopped and alternative approaches taken.

Although there are numerous ways one can eliminate hyperpigmentation, worth noting is the fact that at this practice the patient gets a personalized evaluation and treatment plan that is specific for their needs.
