" I am glad that I was granted the opportunity to praise this office. Being a person that never felt good about seeing a doctor, I wait with anticipation about seeing Dr. Seymour Weaver and staff. You guys make me feel comfortable and give me hope that my problem will be cured. Most of all, the staff relaxes me with their sweet smile, great sense of humor, and soothing conversation. If I have to complain about anything, it would be that I didn't discover you, your staff, and my treatments any sooner. Keep up the good work!!!!"

Hair loss treatment with medication from Specialist in Houston area

Most people don’t realize that dermatologists don’t just treat skin disorders and help reduce the signs of aging. Dermatologists also treat hair loss. Hair loss can occur as a natural part of aging or from an underlying medical condition. Dr. W Dermatology, located in Houston and Katy TX has extensive experience treating hair loss. Sometimes the best treatment is medication.

Some types of hair loss:

  • Pattern baldness: Also called androgenetic alopecia, this is an inherited condition. It affects more men than women. Male pattern baldness includes the hairline receding and thinning on the top of the head with eventual bald spots. Women’s pattern baldness involves hair thinning, but the frontal hairline does not recede.
  • Alopecia areata: Bald patches develop on the scalp, beard, eyebrows, or eyelashes. It is believed to be an autoimmune disease.
  • Hormonal changes: Under or over active thyroids can cause hair loss. If the imbalance is corrected, hair loss may stop.

Medicines used to treat hair loss:

  • Propecia is used to treat male pattern baldness. It works by keeping testosterone from developing into DHT, a hormone that is a large part of hair loss. This is only approved for use in men.
  • Minoxidil (Rogaine) is helpful for both men and women struggling with pattern baldness or hair loss due to age or hormones. The exact way it works to stop hair loss is unknown.
  • Spironolactone is showing promising results treating female pattern baldness. This is not recommended for men.
  • Hormone replacement therapy: If hair loss is due to menopausal changes, this can halt hair loss.
  • Corticosteroids are used to treat alopecia areata. While no specific medicines exist for this condition, corticosteroids are used to effectively treat alopecia areata.
