Man with Tatoo on his back

In many instances, tattoos are satisfactory and remain a treasure for years. For some people, however, a tattoo can be a reminder of a bad decision – or a bad tattoo artist. If you have a tattoo that you no longer wish to look at or show to others, you are an ideal candidate for the laser tattoo removal process. Offered in our Cinco Ranch office in Katy, this procedure is very straightforward.

The tattoo

A tattoo is, on a technical level, a design made through the insertion of pigment into the skin’s dermis, which is beneath the surface. Pigment is inserted by rupturing the epidermal layer of skin and depositing ink below. Today, tattoos are applied with tiny needles that move in rapid succession in an up and down motion. The result is potentially larger tattoos with more choices in pigment in a shorter period of time.

Can my tattoo be removed?

A tattoo is supposed to be permanent, which means that removal can be challenging. Many surgeons warn their patients that it may not be possible to completely wipe away the evidence of a tattoo. However, this viewpoint is gradually changing as innovative forms of technology are showing promising results on various pigments. Some of the factors that may impact the success of tattoo removal include the application method, the age of the tattoo, its size, and the types and colors of pigments used. Some find that newer tattoos take more treatments to eliminate and that “bad” tattoos, containing uneven deposits of pigment, are also more challenging.

Lasers for tattoo removal

Laser technology has changed the face of medicine as a whole. As they have become more developed, various types of lasers have shown their power in the tattoo removal process. With laser removal versus a more conventional procedure such as excision, there is a reduced risk of scarring and overall outstanding results. There are a few different types of lasers that are commonly used to target unwanted ink.

Each of the Q-switched lasers has been designed specifically for the removal of tattoos. Their energy switches from short to high pulses. Of the three, and the technology used by Dr. Weaver, the Q-switched Nd: YAG laser is the most advanced, effective on the most varied hues.

How lasers work

Laser tattoo removal is safe for the skin that surrounds ink particles. Applied in pulses, laser energy is absorbed by pigment and breaks it apart within the skin. As ink is broken down into the smallest particles, it is absorbed by the body and eliminated naturally.
