What is eczema?

Eczema, also called dermatitis, is a chronic, noncontagious skin condition, which is estimated to affect between nine and thirty percent of people in the United States. It is a broad term, encompassing many different skin conditions characterized by dry, itchy patches of skin. It can develop on any area of the body, but it is most common on the arms, legs, and face. Symptoms are often complicated by scratching, which can cause skin to crust over and ooze.

Types of eczema

• Atopic dermatitis – This is the most common and best-known form of eczema. It tends to cycle through phases of remission and activity, causing dry, itchy areas of skin. It is believed to be caused by an abnormal response of the immune system.
• Contact dermatitis – This is a skin reaction caused by exposure to an allergic trigger. Possible allergens include cosmetics, fragrances, household cleaners, and metals. It causes an itching or burning sensation.
• Nummular Dermatitis – One of the less common forms of eczema, this is usually seen in older men. It is a chronic condition, causing round, irritated, crusty, scaly patches. It typically develops on the arms, lower legs, back, or buttocks.
• Dyshidrotic Dermatitis – This condition is characterized by deep blisters, accompanied by a burning, itching sensation. It affects the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands.
• Neurodermatitis – Also called lichen simplex chronicus, this chronic skin inflammation is the result of excessive scratching. It forms scaly patches of skin, which tend to harden and acquire a leathery texture over time.
• Seborrheic Dermatitis – Dandruff is the best known type of seborrheic dermatitis. This condition causes oily, scaly, yellowish areas of skin, usually on the scalp, face, or other areas of the body.
• Stasis Dermatitis – This form of eczema usually affects older adults, appearing on the lower legs. It is associated with vein disease, and it may cause discoloration, itching, or both. In the advanced stages, stasis dermatitis can cause bleeding or oozing.
