Handling melasma with help from your Katy dermatologist

Treatment For Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition that affects millions of people, mostly women. Statistics show that only 10 percent of those treated for melasma are men. Although an exact cause is not known, melasma does seem to have triggers, such as hormonal fluctuations. Women taking oral contraceptives or those who are pregnant may develop melasma. Such cases often fade away on their own without treatment, gradually disappearing as hormones regain balance.

For some, melasma is a problem that lasts for many years if not treated. Although there are no physically uncomfortable symptoms associated with this skin condition, some suffer with the emotional effects of highly visible patches of discoloration. Living with the impact of melasma can be challenging. Dr. Seymour Weaver is an experienced dermatologist with offices in Katy and Houston who offers effective treatment for melasma. Treatment options for melasma include:

  • Topical hydroquinone can be prescribed for daily application. This medication may be formulated in liquid, gel, lotion, or cream form. Some over the counter melasma treatments may contain hydroquinone. However, the products prescribed by your dermatologist contain a greater concentration of effective lightening agents and will achieve better results.
  • Triple cream may be prescribed to clear melasma. This type of formulation may contain a corticosteroid along with tretinoin and hydroquinone.
  • Kojic acid or other topical medications may be applied to melasma to lighten skin.

Dermatological procedures for the treatment of melasma can be gentle and effective. Dr. Weaver may recommend microdermabrasion or chemical peels for the improvement of affected skin. Each of these in-office treatments aids in the turnover of skin cells, removing damaged, dead cells from the surface so that healthy new cells may emerge. Microdermabrasion does so mechanically, while a chemical peel reveals new skin using a gentle acid solution.

These treatments should be performed by a skilled dermatological practitioner, who has the training and experience to design treatments around your skin type and specific needs. Dr. Weaver has provided excellent dermatological care for a wide variety of skin conditions to many years. Under our care, you can regain confidence in your skin.
