Keep Up the Good Work

" I am glad that I was granted the opportunity to praise this office. Being a person that never felt good about seeing a doctor, I wait with anticipation about seeing Dr. Seymour Weaver and staff. You guys make me feel comfortable and give me hope that my problem will be cured. Most of all, the staff relaxes me with their sweet smile, great sense of humor, and soothing conversation. If I have to complain about anything, it would be that I didn't discover you, your staff, and my treatments any sooner. Keep up the good work!!!!"

What is melasma and what are the different forms of treatment for Cinco Ranch or Katy area patients?

At Dr. W Dermatology, we have patients who come to us with a wide variety of conditions. Some want to turn back the hands of time and fight the visible signs of aging. Others have skin conditions that are affecting their appearance. One condition that is particularly notorious for having a dramatic cosmetic impact is melasma.

Melasma appears as darkened areas of skin. It is directly linked with hormonal changes and sun exposure. While both males and females can get melasma, it is most common in women.

Sometimes called “the mask of pregnancy,” hormone related melasma is caused by fluctuations in progesterone and estrogen. These hormones tend to change frequently during pregnancy. Melasma can also occur during menopause, during hormone replacement therapy, or in women who are taking birth control.

Melasma can also be caused (or flare up) due to sun exposure. Patients with melasma will need to limit their time in the sunlight, particularly during the most intense hours, to avoid exacerbating the condition.

Melasma is a chronic condition that varies from patient to patient. Some only experience mild symptoms, while others can have a more severe occurrence. Keeping it under control requires the help of an experienced dermatologist such as Dr. Weaver.

Treatment for mild melasma is often in the form of topical creams to lighten the dark areas of skin. The creams often include hydroquinone, azelaic or kojic acid, and tretinoin. Some patients may also benefit from steroid creams and regular chemical peels. All melasma patients are encouraged to use higher SPF sunscreens daily and minimize time outside in the sunlight. For patients with more severe symptoms, laser treatments can help address the dark pigmentation and lighten the skin.

The team at Dr. W dermatology is experienced in helping diagnose and treat patients with all forms of melasma. If you are in the Cinco Ranch or Katy area and are tired of dealing with cosmetic implications of melasma, call us today for a consultation. We can put together a treatment plan that can help you feel better about your skin and appearance.
