Reasons to choose a mole removal procedure in Katy, TX

Moles are a common feature seen on many people’s skin. Some of us are born with moles, and others may appear as we age. One of the major contributing factors to the development of moles is sun exposure, which is especially concerning due to the link between harmful UV rays, moles, and skin cancer. Certain types of moles can run in families, as well.
It is possible to have a common mole, or have a dysplastic nevus (atypical mole). Dysplastic moles may be hereditary. Each type of mole can occur on any area of the body, though dysplastic moles tend to develop on areas that receive more sun exposure. Just because a mole develops because of the sun does not mean that it will develop skin cancer. However, we encourage our patients, especially those with atypical moles, to practice adequate sun protection, avoiding tanning beds and direct exposure to natural sunlight during peak times. Dysplastic moles should also be monitored through home skin checks performed monthly.
When atypical moles appear, it is common to feel concerned about skin cancer, particularly melanoma. Some people consider the mole removal procedure as a preventive measure to avoid the progression to skin cancer. We are happy to consult with patients in our office in Katy or in Houston, TX regarding the condition of moles and the suitability of removal.
Removing common moles or atypical moles in an effort to prevent skin cancer is not necessarily effective, because it is possible for melanoma to develop as a new lesion or colored area. Mole removal will typically take place if either type of mole has undergone changes that could be indicative of skin cancer. Moles that are dark or highly visible can also be removed to improve the overall appearance of the skin.
Our staff has extensive training and experience in treating a wide variety of skin conditions. To schedule a visit to have your moles examined, contact us in Katy or Houston.
