Chemical Peels Q & A
A chemical peel uses a solution of one or more chemicals (which are usually naturally occurring) to help dissolve the surface layers of skin and reveal a fresher complexion.
Dr. Obasi uses several different peels in his office. He’ll perform a comprehensive skincare analysis with you to determine which type of peel works best for your face:
Superficial peel
This is sometimes called a “lunchtime peel,” because you can return to work or other activities right after the treatment. Dr. Obasi uses a mild alpha-hydroxy acid to gently exfoliate the outer layer of skin. This type of peel addresses rough texture and minor discoloration on the face, neck, décolletage, or hands. Afterwards, your skin may be pink and flaky, but exfoliation occurs quickly.
Medium peel
This peel uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate outer and middle skin layers, eliminating damaged cells. Medium peels are good for age spots, freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, rough skin, and actinic keratosis (a precancerous skin condition). Expect some stinging, redness, and swelling. Crusting and peeling take place within two weeks.
Deep peel
As a more aggressive treatment, this peel uses trichloroacetic acid or phenols to remedy moderately deep lines, significant pigmentation irregularities, or shallow scars. Healing takes about three weeks, and you must avoid sun exposure and smoking after the treatment.
Chemical peels are safe and effective for most patients. While they don’t produce results as dramatic as laser treatments, they can address a range of skin problems, such as:
- Acne scars
- Superficial scars
- Crow’s feet
- Wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Sagging skin
- Rough texture
- Uneven skin tone
A series of mild or medium peels can get your skin into a beautiful condition. With periodic treatments, your complexion can stay youthful and radiant year-round.
Depending on the type of chemical peel, the length of your results will vary. Light peels can give you fresh-looking skin for several weeks, while a deep peel can dramatically change your complexion for years. Dr. Obasi might recommend a maintenance plan of peels once you achieve your desired results.
