Melbourne area residents have alternatives to amalgam fillings

alternatives to amalgam fillings from from dentist in Moonee Ponds

If you have old dental fillings, there is a very good chance they are made of amalgam. Many patients say they have received “silver” fillings without ever being informed about what those fillings actually contain. It is not silver at all, but a mixture of metals (an alloy) which is composed of about half mercury.   Although the dental industry has continued to promote amalgam as a safe and economical dental material, a number of independent studies disagree. Many patients disagree, and the holistic dental community disagrees. … Continue reading

Safe Amalgam Removal from expert dentist in Melbourne

What is the danger ? Dental amalgam is believed by some to be in a stable form in a filling, bound by a combination of other metals. However, mercury can be absorbed through skin, inhaled, or ingested. When a conventional dentist removes amalgam without precautions, the patient (and the dental team) are exposed to particle scatter, contaminated water spray, and mercury vapor.   Mercury emits toxic vapor from the friction of chewing, brushing, or having teeth cleaned. A dentist’s drill magnifies that risk significantly. A beautiful alternative Patients who need to have amalgam fillings removed, or choose to do so, … Continue reading

Amalgam Removal from dentist in Melbourne

Dental amalgam is often called by the innocent-sounding name of “silver.” In fact, that refers to the colour, not the type of metal. Amalgam is an alloy, made of about 50 percent mercury and a mixture of metals. Many patients say they were unaware of this fact when their fillings were placed, and now they want the amalgam removed. Others object to the colour, which tends to blacken over time. It is possible to remove these fillings safely and effectively, but a specific protocol is needed.   Our practice is mercury free, which means that we do not use amalgam … Continue reading

The more science discovers about dental amalgam, the more individual patients are questioning the use of this material to repair tooth damage. Amalgam dental fillings may be referred to as “silver fillings,” but these restorations actually contain a mixture of metals that are bound together with mercury. Fifty percent of an amalgam filling is, in fact, mercury. Although amalgam fillings have been the standard of practice in general dentistry for over a century, there are many good reasons to avoid the use of this material. Patients of holistic-minded dentists are able to choose alternatives to amalgam dental fillings. Even more … Continue reading

Amalgam Removal Melbourne - Amalgam Filling

Amalgam fillings were once a standard dental treatment. More recently they have fallen out of favour. Alternative materials such as porcelain or composite resin look natural and do not contain mercury. They often require less alteration to the tooth. Many patients that need a new filling are looking for materials that are biocompatible. However, the decision can be more challenging for those who already have amalgam fillings. The mercury dilemma The precise amount of mercury vapour released by “silver” fillings, the percentage of it that enters the body, and the impact it may have on health, are at the heart … Continue reading

Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol

  • Chlorella drink prior is given prior to treatment and a mouth rinse post-treatment. Chlorella can help bind and prevent mercury absorption.
  • Physical protective barriers - Masks, protective coverings, eyewear, in-mouth non-latex dental dams, and other steps are taken to prevent physical contact with mercury for the patient and staff.
  • Oral evacuation - Generous amounts of water are used to continuously rinse particulate matter from the mouth while suctioning it away. Combined with protective dental dams, this prevents patients from swallowing dental amalgam particles during treatment. Additionally, the rinsing helps lower the temperature of the filling, reducing the amount of mercury vapour released.
  • External air - A continuous supply of non-contaminated air or oxygen is delivered via a mask or similar apparatus, preventing inhalation of mercury vapour or particles.
  • "Chunk it out" method - Rather than using a drill to grind the filling down, it is carefully removed in the largest possible pieces, minimising friction, vaporisation.
  • High Volume Evacuation Suction is used by the dental assistant to remove amalgam particles in the mouth.
  • High Volume Air suction and Air Purifiers are used in the clinical room that is able to remove mercury vapour from the room.
  • Amalgam separator use - This device collects mercury-contaminated waste before it can enter the sewage system, allowing us to dispose of it safely.
