Growing healthy smiles: The importance of children’s dental care

Dental check-ups are one of the most important, and most frequently overlooked, aspects of oral health for patients of all ages. Children, like adults, should see a dentist about every six months. Early check-ups and hygienist cleanings can help prevent cavities and other common childhood dental problems.
Smile in Style is proud to participate in the federal Child Dental Benefits Scheme, which offers financial assistance for essential treatment of children between the ages of two and seventeen. If your child qualifies, you have probably received an official notice of eligibility, valid for the entire calendar year.
Early dental care is important for several reasons.

  • Tiny teeth can be difficult to clean, and many parents underestimate the risk of childhood tooth decay. We educate both parent and child about proper hygiene techniques, the role of nutrition in oral hygiene, avoiding and handling oral injuries, and a variety of other topics.
  • Regular check-ups allow us to monitor your child’s dental health and development. If decay or other oral disease begins, we can diagnose and treat it before the problem progresses. If there are signs of orthodontic problems, early detection allows for advanced planning and optimal timing of treatment.
  • If your child has a dental emergency, such as a knocked out tooth, the experience will be less stressful if he or she is familiar and comfortable with the dentist and office.

Holiday breaks are great times to schedule kids’ dental appointments. You can avoid scheduling conflicts because you won’t need to work around school days. Additionally, children may be more likely to adopt unhealthy snacking habits or lax oral hygiene when on vacation. If your child is a young athlete, this is also a great time to get him or her fitted for a protective mouthguard. Outdoor sports are especially popular during the long summer break.

If your little one is due for a check-up, call us today at 03 8400 4104 (Moonee Ponds) or 03 8001 6021 (Sunbury).
