In May 2019 I travelled along with my family to Dijon France to complete my final laser Masters module. This module covered extra training in my area of interest which was laser gum, bone and implant surgery under Dr Thierry Maleca. It was spring time in France and apart from the great learning and getting to meet other graduating dentists from around the world; we also got to enjoy the scenery, culture and food.
From here I travelled with my family through Italy to the conference venue and graduation at Lake Bled in Slovenia. The Masters training for me had started 3 years before when I attended the 2016 Symposium at the same venue with my wife. We had such a great time in a fairy tale like location that it was good to return and share the experience with our children this time.
As well as completing my Laser Masters graduation with 13 other candidates from around the world, I was able to display a poster of one of my cases involving laser restoration of broken down teeth, and I presented at the Symposium on a new laser application that I had discovered. My lecture was on the use of laser light to break cements under orthodontic appliances and splints, to enable easier removal with less damage to the underlying teeth. I presented three of my orthodontic cases to illustrate the settings and concepts.
The graduation ceremony and Fotona Laser party was held in the Bled Ice Hockey Stadium which had been decked out for the occasion. There were 600 other guests from all over the world. The Fotona Lasers are used by clinicians in the areas of Dentistry, Gynaecology and Dermatology. The party began with a range of famous Slovenian musicians doing solo acts; including, percussion, cello, opera singer, laser harp and a range of talented Slovenian bands.
So apart from a wonderful lifetime experience for my family and I, I also returned home with new knowledge and laser skills to benefit you, my patients and to share the knowledge with my assistant dentists and staff.
